Performance tomorrow

The bar I will perform in is fancier than I thought. I think I could
be kicked out. There are tables at the perfect height, but the room
has a cavernous echo. I can't tell if the typing will be lost or
incredibly annoying (hence leading to my being kicked out). I guess
that is a part of the process. I haven't told anyone about it,
allowing the fliers to sit annonymously on a table full of high gloss
brochures. They are meant to look like Xeroxes and look strange next
to the expensive yet disposable media. I want people to come upon the
event like an accident, a secret. It makes it both more personal and
voyeuristic.

Dallas

It's strange to be in humidity so suddenly, to be happy for the wind
and not want a jacket. Just let it blow through you. Thunderstorms
have rolled in, due to strike any minute. Bring the green umbrella.

First Pre-Planned Public Performance

Carbon Copy

This weekend, I am announcing my first public typewriter performance. At this performance of typing, I will attempt to free-write a fictional narrative for an hour without pausing to consider the plot. I have been practicing, but do not have a memorized script, so I suspect the environment will affect the outcome of the narrative.

After each page is completed, the original (created with the antique typing tape on the machine-- practically illegible) will be archived into a folder. The carbon copy (which will be more legible for the carbon paper) will be given to an audience member. In this way, the story will be disseminated in a fragmented way into the public.

If you are in Dallas, the performance will take place at 11:30 AM, Saturday March 28th, at the Fairmont Dallas Hotel in the lobby bar. See you there!

Making art in my room

Perhaps I have been looking at too much art? Perhaps I am being influenced by the surrealness of it all. But i have begun making strange art in my hotel room. I am ready to hole up in here for weeks, drinking beer and frantically making art, like the stuff of the legends. Everything in this city is dirty, but fresh, busy, frantic, chaotic, new and old, upside down and up and coming.
New images are up on flicker. Link to the right.

Typing- More details

I lift a page from the right and place it in the typewriter.

I type, left to right, from top to bottom.

I remove the paper from the typewriter and stack it, face down to the left.

I resist the urge to reread it. I smile when I see the spelling mistakes.

Shades

Video

I posted a video of the installation process on my "News" blog. It is complicated to have more than one blog! It is just for fun. I am going to be posting new "Here2Indiana" content soon!

Futility and angst

I have been rendering video for hours. Apparently videos that look beautiful on the computer screen and on the Internet seek revenge by looking terrible on televisions. Damn you, old techology! Why must I lower my standards to make my work available to the masses!

Video Work in Progress

Today was our first day of shooting for "All Good Things Will Come to You Soon." After months of dreaming, weeks of planning, and days of bossing around interns, the first day of shooting has finally arrived and ended. I would like this piece to be a surprise, so I am not planning on putting clips of work-in-progress, but I would like to comment on thoughts that have come up in this process. First of all, I am collaborating with actors, artists who have certain ideas about things are portrayed, etc. Today, my actor was very young, being directed by my young interns while I oversaw the process and results. The scene is supposed to represent the struggle to create something perfect (perfect for a vision you have, whether clear or not). It is also supposed to represent how this struggle is a life-long quest, as opposed to a foot race.

So the scene depicts a young woman trying to make a drawing. Each drawing isn't quite right, but she is satisfied each is a step toward that goal. I am listening to my assistant direct her, things like, "Look happy about that. Was that a good line? Should that other line be different?" She is looking at the drawing with contentment, every now and then giving a little smile, or biting her lip. That is what acting like an artist should look like, I suppose. That image will read as "real."

When I make work (here and here), I don't seem to have such a face. It is an intent, intense face, mostly with pursed brows, pressed lips, leaning on my hand distraughtly. I never feel that euphoria I suppose everyone imagines artists have... it's hard work. It's draining. It's frustrating. But what else would I do with me time-- what would be the point? I don't know what I would do without it.
